Sectur trusts a swift recovery of the tourism market in Mexico

The federal Secretary of Tourism affirmed that he is convinced that the harmonious and solidary work of the sector will allow a speedy recovery that will once again place Mexico in the Top Ten of the world market

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués participated this afternoon as a guest in the First Virtual National Board of Directors held by the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra); and later attended the Second Special Session of the General Assembly of the Union of Secretaries of Tourism (Asetur).

The head of Sectur affirmed that today the tourism industry worldwide is experiencing its worst crisis since 1950, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a situation that severely compromises the economic situation of all the nations of the world, since this activity is a important engine of development and growth, in addition to generating foreign exchange, jobs and investment.

He explained that, according to data from the World Tourism Organization, in the first quarter of 2020 there will have been a decrease of 67 million international tourists, which would represent 22.4 percent less, compared to the same period in 2019, with a drop in foreign exchange earnings of $ 80 billion.

In the case of Mexico, he specified that, if the containment is prolonged until next summer, a reduction of 20.6 percent in the Tourism Gross Domestic Product is expected, going from 8.7 percent to 6.9 percent of participation in the national economy.

Likewise, the losses in the tourist consumption of the sector are estimated at one trillion 951 billion pesos, with an equivalent of 101 thousand 254 million dollars, which would mean a fall of 41.6 percent, compared to 2019.

However, he warned that we must wait for the results of the second half of this year, as well as the impact of the crisis in the summer period and the December season, to have more accurate data on the magnitude of the losses.

The owner of Sectur indicated that from January to March of this year fourteen million international tourists arrived in our country, 36.5 fewer than in the same period of 2019; while the foreign exchange income for this concept was seven thousand 221 million dollars, 44.6 less than in the first quarter of last year.

He added that since the beginning of the pandemic, the federal Tourism Secretariat has been working in coordination with the state government authorities and with the business sector to start the gradual reactivation of tourism activity, once the health crisis is over.

“Tourism is a very noble and generous economic activity, which will undoubtedly continue to generate development, progress and well-being, and I am convinced that the harmonious and supportive work of the tourism sector will allow a speedy recovery that will once again place Mexico in the Top Ten of the world tourism ”, he said.

He explained that it must be considered that, initially, national tourists will choose to make short trips, in a range of three to five hours by road, which will favor the regionalization of tourism, so that Sectur is integrating attractive packages with a regional focus. that boosts and energizes the local economy.

He added that, in addition, Mexico will have a great opportunity to reactivate its international market, especially the United States and Canada, which together represent 67.3 percent of the total international visitors we receive annually, of which 55.2 percent come from the Union American and 12.1 are Canadian.

Sectur anticipates that potential tourists from these two important tourist markets will travel to nearby destinations, on flights of no more than four and a half hours, which places Mexico in that range.

He also highlighted that there is currently a private investment in tourism projects in the portfolio for 287.7 billion pesos, mainly in Nayarit, Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Guerrero and Oaxaca, which will represent 90,300 new hotel rooms and 79,000 new direct jobs.

"In addition, we have had talks with prominent businessmen, who have expressed their interest in investing in various areas of tourism activity. In due course, we will publicize these investment packages, ”he asserted.

He also informed them that they are carrying out various actions for the reactivation of tourism in Mexico, some of them focused on strengthening internal tourism, which in 2019 meant a total of 258 million tourists, of which 102 million stayed in hotel; and a consumption of 142 billion dollars, 82 percent of total tourist consumption.
