According to Sectur the pandemic is an opportunity to build a new era of tourism
This was stated by the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico during the LXV UNWTO Regional Commission for America Meeting
By participating in the LXV Meeting of the Regional Commission for America of the World Tourism Organization, the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, stressed that the global crisis experienced by the Covid-19 pandemic places the world Given the historic opportunity to build a new era for the tourism industry, far from the practices of massive, over-exploitation and environmental deterioration.
At the work meeting, held this morning in a virtual way, the head of Sectur stated that the appearance of the coronavirus has generated damages not only in the health and economic fields, but also in the social and cultural spheres, making evident the exhaustion and decline of the traditional way of sightseeing.
He argued that, despite all those involved in this sector, we must accept that traveling, the essence of its activity, was overshadowed by becoming one of the main transmission vehicles of the contagion.
“Now, in times of transformation, we assume that tourism is a totally interdependent activity, that the borders we know have to do more to show the traveler a more cultural and idiosyncratic content than merely economic, which implies that the sector must face greater challenges with innovative and higher quality tourism products, to respond to the needs of an increasingly informed and demanding tourist, in which the binomial quality and service must be added to the health protocols, legacy of this bitter experience that is the Covid -19, ”he said.
He added that today we must conceive tourism not only as an economic activity or a geographical region, evaluated with economic figures and indicators, but as an activity capable of combining values arising from a deep ethical and creative attitude.
Likewise, to give a new meaning to the word tourism, broader meanings must be constructed that recover all the positive, based on criteria of safety, responsibility and trust.
Therefore, Secretary Torruco Marqués expressed that we should not limit ourselves to seeing only the negative effects of this pandemic, but that we must appreciate that this forced pause has given us spectacular scenes such as the return of dolphins to the canals of Venice, of the whales and bioluminescence on Acapulco's beaches and a reduction in pollution levels.
“This places us before the historic opportunity to build a new era for tourism, which is not focused on exclusivity and does not depend on external factors. We must avoid repeating practices of massiveness, overexploitation and environmental deterioration, "he demanded.
Before the Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization, Zurab Pololikashvili, he added that we are on the threshold of understanding tourism differently, so it is time to make concrete decisions and assume commitments and responsibilities to safeguard its future.
"For this reason, in the Ministry of Tourism of the Government of Mexico we have established among our priorities the realization of a different tourism, with a social approach, that privileges the development and growth of the most unprotected sectors of society, mainly those that inhabit in the tourist destinations of the country ”, he specified.
So he made a call to adopt tourism as a tool for social reconciliation.
The head of Sectur explained that during this health crisis, the Ministry of Tourism of Mexico, in coordination with the Ministry of Health, has developed various protocols, the first three for lodging centers and restaurants, and the fourth related to hygiene guidelines for the gradual reactivation and opening of the tourism sector, including all places, without exception, where the tourist travels and goes.
“Similarly, we launched the“ Sustainable Mexico Reborn ”program, through which we have developed a series of alliances for the realization of projects and policies that allow the development of sustainable tourism, in which the local community is the protagonist and main beneficiary ”, he expressed.
