Colombian President rules out prolonged quarantine
"It is not a viable option to lock ourselves in until a vaccine appears; we have to learn to live with the virus," said Iván Duque Márquez
“We must understand that it is not a viable option for the sustainability of our societies to simply say: we are going to lock ourselves in until a vaccine appears; we have to learn to live with this virus (covid-19) and we have to beat it ”.
This was stated this Sunday by President Iván Duque Márquez at the start of the Facebook Live ‘Prevention and Action’, in which he answered questions from Colombians about the current situation of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.
In this context, the President emphasized that “we Colombians cannot fall into defeatism to say that somewhere we have not been judicious enough, and then the only alternative has to be to shut ourselves up; no. We, as a society, have to demonstrate that it is our discipline, our citizen culture that takes us forward ”.
In the same way, he stressed that "we have many more alternatives in our discipline and in our citizen culture than simply staying in the discourse of shutting ourselves up until a vaccine appears"
He assured that no one is guilty in the face of the scope of a global pandemic and urged the rulers to work as a team.
“This is not about looking for culprits here. Citizens are not guilty of a pandemic, governments are not guilty of the pandemic. Neither the National Government nor the governorates or the mayoralties. We are all facing it. And our responsibility is to act as a team. And that's why we are all there to support each other, ”said the Head of State.
Immediately afterwards, he stressed that "we have to demonstrate as Colombians that we can take targeted, sectoral, regionalized measures, that where we have to do targeted hardening, we will, but, above all, our spirit must be to get ahead" .
No vaccine or covid-19 treatment
The President, based on information from the World Health Organization (WHO), indicated that the country must be clear that there will be no vaccine against covid-19 in at least one year and that at this time there is no verified treatment against the virus.
“The Director of the World Health Organization (Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus) has said it, the expectation is that in at least a year we will have a vaccine. If you arrive earlier, welcome; and it will also require universal distribution so that it reaches all the countries of the world. But let us start from the basis that we will be a year without a vaccine, "he stressed.
In this sense, President Duque stated that the challenge of all the countries of the world "is that we must protect life, protect the health system, but we also have to protect the life of jobs and the life of micro, small, medium and large companies ”.
Finally, the Head of State said that the pandemic "we beat with citizen culture, we beat with physical distancing, complying with protocols and above all, understanding that we take care of ourselves and protect others," and reiterated the importance of using the face masks, hand washing and the need to protect those over 70 years of age.
