Sustainable model of Costa Rica will favor tourism recovery
The Minister of Tourism stated: "We have opted for limited growth, without crowds, where well-being is a way of life, in which 94% of the accommodations have less than 40 rooms"
The leaders of world tourism, including Costa Rica, reflected at the Skift Global Forum 2020 on the trends to face the reactivation of this economic activity hard hit by the pandemic.
In the event under the theme "Laying the foundations for sustainable tourism" participated the Rector Minister of Tourism Gustavo J. Segura Sancho, who was interviewed by Jeremy Kressmann, editor of Skift. The hierarch referred to the sustainable tourism model for which Costa Rica is recognized worldwide and the advantages that it entails in the face of the recovery caused by this health emergency.
“Costa Rica has opted for a limited growth model, without crowds, where well-being is a way of life, in which 94% of the accommodations have less than 40 rooms; a country that concentrates more than 6% of the world's biodiversity and that is also characterized by its robust health system, which is particularly important at this juncture, ”said the Minister.
At the event, the Minister defined sustainable tourism as the balanced interaction between the use of the country's natural and cultural resources, the improvement of the quality of life in local communities and the economic success of the industry.
Segura stressed that sustainability continues to be the core of the country's tourism efforts coupled with promoting the country as a wellness destination. At the same time, the hierarch emphasized the opportunity that tourists who visit us have to live integral experiences in nature, gastronomy, adventure, well-being and culture, benefiting the value chain of different communities.
He also stressed the early implementation of the health protocols for the reactivation of tourism and stressed that through the ICT Capacita platform, more than 7 thousand employees in the sector prepared to implement them.
“We have a 2017-2021 National Tourism Plan that seeks to maintain this industry as the engine of the Costa Rican economy, promoting a sustainable, innovative and inclusive development model. Costa Rica is committed to implementing sustainability as a model for development, raising the need to meet the current requirements of society, without compromising the right of future generations to satisfy their needs. All these efforts made us worthy of the "Champion of the Earth 2019" award granted by the United Nations, in the category of public policies, "said the Costa Rican Minister of Tourism.
At the event, the new video of the Only the Essentials campaign was officially released to inspire the world with the sustainable essence of Costa Rica.
