The Secretary General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Zurab Pololikashvili, has just arrived in Brazil for a series of agendas focused on the safe and gradual return of activity in the country. One of the first agendas of the highest authority on world tourism was a meeting with the President of the Republic, Jair Bolsonaro, and the Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Álvaro Antônio. During the meeting, Zurab reinforced the choice of Brazil as the first country in the Americas to receive an office from the entity.
“It is an honor to receive the world's leading tourism authority at a decisive moment for our activity in Brazil. After months of great difficulty, where our activity was the first and most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, we are living the moment of the resumption of tourism. Our work with the UNWTO will undoubtedly be decisive for the gradual and safe return of our activity and I have no doubt that this association will emerge even stronger from that moment on, ”the minister assessed.
Among the objectives of the visit, follow the actions developed by Pasta aimed at resuming activity, as well as reaffirming the joint work between the entity and the Federal Government. During the meeting with President Bolsonaro, Zurab also reported on interest in alliances to offer qualification of the workforce in the sector. Finally, the Secretary General evaluated the possibility of holding, in Angra dos Reis (RJ), a Forum with tourism ministers from various countries. Zurab also reaffirmed his commitment to help the country increase the number of national and international tourism.
After the agenda at the Planalto Palace, the OMT representative went to the Secretariat of Tourism where he met with the Secretaries of the Secretariat and part of the technical team to learn about the actions that have been developed within the federal government with a focus on protecting the activity. during the pandemic and in the recovery actions of the sector, as well as in attracting investment.
“It is the first time that a government has given priority to tourism. We are committed to the Brazilian government to invest more in qualification and infrastructure, in addition to opening an advertising office in Brazil because it is impossible to develop tourism without a good qualification. We have products and methodologies that we are going to bring here to train young Brazilians for this market ”, promised Zurab.
Among the determining factors for the resumption of tourism is innovation. And MTur's alliance with the World Tourism Organization has already resulted in important achievements, such as the 1st Brazilian Challenge for Tourism Innovation and the decision to install Wakalua in Brazil, the first global center dedicated to combining innovative actions with tourism.
"Innovation will be an important differential to increase Brazil's competitiveness at this time when activities are resumed, and the strengthening of the alliance with the UNWTO will certainly allow us to have a significant gain in the quality of the tourism products we offer", Minister Marcelo Álvaro Antônio concluded.
