Viva Aerobus exceeds one million passengers in December 2020
The Mexican airline has transported more than 8 million people in all of 2020
Viva Aerobus, Mexico's ultra-low-cost airline, reports that in December 2020 it registered more than 1.1 million passengers, an increase of 15% compared to last November. This figure is also close to the levels of December 2019, when the airline reported just over 1.13 million passengers (a difference of less than 3% between both years), as a result of the airline's responsible reactivation strategy and the expansion of its route offer in order to meet the needs of air connectivity in a safe and reliable manner according to current demand.
Over the course of the year, Viva Aerobus registered a gradual and constant restoration of demand, the preference of passengers based on its low prices and its renewed commitment to health care through the Viva Contigo prevention and hygiene program and in a greater flexibility by innovating with products such as Total Refund, Zero Fare, Tu Aliado and the elimination of charges for changes in flights. Consequently, Viva closed the year with more than 8 million passengers and a load factor of 80.5%, one of the strongest at this juncture.
In this challenging year for the sector, Viva Aerobus maintained a leadership position in the reactivation of the industry by becoming the first airline in the American continent to resume 100% of its operational capacity, an achievement achieved in November. And, subsequently, it was consolidated as the first Mexican airline to grow its operational capacity, increasing its offer (seats per kilometer available) by 11% in December 2020 compared to the same month in 2019. In this same sense, Viva concluded the year with an offer of 131 routes (103 national and 28 international), 12 more routes than at the end of 2019.
This involved the launch of 28 new routes: 13 national and 15 international during 2020. From Monterrey, new flights began to Havana, San Antonio (SAT) and Dallas Fort Worth (DFW); from Cancun to Aguascalientes, Houston, San Luis Potosí and the Cuban cities of Havana, Holguín, Santa Clara and Santiago; the Mazatlán - Chihuahua route; Mérida - Havana, and from Mexico City to Acapulco, Ciudad Obregón, Campeche, Ciudad del Carmen, Chetumal, Durango, La Paz, Los Mochis, Tampico, Veracruz and, to the international Chicago, DFW, Houston, Havana, Los Angeles and San Antonio.
"We start this year 100% prepared to serve our passengers as they deserve: with low prices, disciplined prevention and hygiene protocols, greater flexibility and a wider range of routes so that they can be transported to where they need it safely and reliably" mentioned Juan Carlos Zuazua, General Director of Viva Aerobus. "2020 represented challenges for the entire sector, but Viva's solid business model, our resilience and adaptability have allowed us to lead in a responsible reactivation by increasing our operation, identifying new market opportunities and achieving a growing preference for travelers; even, last December we almost equaled the number of passengers registered that same month in 2019 ”, he added.
