On this day, the airline began the operations of the flight that will connect the western United States with the southeast of Mexico, having as its departure and arrival point the International Airport of the City of Mérida, "Manuel Crescencio Rejón" and that will have four weekly frequencies .
California is one of the most populous states with one of the strongest economies in North America. Reports from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) indicate that it estimates that there are 180 thousand Yucatecan migrants abroad, of which 87% are in the United States; The three cities with the most Yucatecans living in that country are: San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland. Additionally, San Francisco, Oakland and Yucatán have immense tourist and economic possibilities for important commercial exchanges in the medium and long term.
Michelle Fridman Hirsch, head of the Yucatan Tourism Development Secretariat (Sefotur) highlighted that “a state with connectivity is a state that is better communicated and with more opportunities for tourism, economic, social and commercial development as instructed by our Governor, Lic. Mauricio Vila Dosal, for this reason we have worked this administration and especially in this time of Covid in a strong way in caring for, recovering and expanding our air, maritime and land connectivity, with new routes that bring us closer to new markets ".
“We are very happy to be able to materialize what we announced at the end of last year with a new route to Oakland that now connects us with Northern California and that, added to the route with Tijuana, will give us an outstanding presence in that important market. Fridman Hirsch concluded.
For his part, Miguel Aguiñiga, Director of Market Development and Distribution of Volaris, commented: “for us it continues to be a priority to bring more Mexicans to their destination safely with the best rates in the market. By connecting Mérida with the city of Oakland, California, we strengthen our leadership in the Visitors, Friends and Family market, in addition to encouraging economic recovery in Mexico and the United States ”.
Volaris is the airline with the largest number of routes to and from Yucatán with other major airports in Mexico, being Mérida - Oakland, the first international route operating with the State, with a stopover in Mexico City; which will also help to complete the quota of the 178 seats that this aircraft has.
Since 2007, Volaris has transported more than 3.5 million Customers to and from this entity.
“In the midst of an unprecedented economic scenario, promoting Mexico abroad should be an opportunity for local communities and investments. The launch of this route fulfills the objective of turning the industry into a pillar of fair and balanced development between regions, as well as a tool for social reconciliation, through the sustainable use of the national tourist heritage, ”Aguiñiga concluded.
In this regard, the Director of Regional Airports of Grupo ASUR, Lic. Héctor Navarrete Muñoz, pointed out that "ASUR is a company committed to the airport industry that is an engine of development in the world, and that is why we have taken all measures necessary to help prevent infections and allow safe transit at airports, we have acquired the material and human resources necessary to address this pandemic since March 2020. "
Oscar Carrillo Maldonado.
It is important to remember that the Mérida Airport and, in general, the arrival of visitors to Yucatán, maintained favorable increases until the first two months of 2020, derived from Sefotur's management with airlines, shipping companies and carriers, as well as the promotion strategy implemented by this agency that placed the capital, Mérida, in the first place in hotel occupancy nationwide in its category, according to data from DataTur in 2019.
