Chilean government announces border closure to contain advance of pandemic

Travel outside the country is restricted and the entry of non-resident foreigners is prohibited

In order to contain the spread of the Coronavirus in the country, this Thursday the Government of Chile unveiled new health measures that establish restrictions on the mobility of people.

According to the Undersecretary of Crime Prevention, Katherine Martorell, among these measures, the closure of borders stands out, both for exit and entry to Chile.

In the case of departures, reported the authority of the Ministry of the Interior, trips abroad will be restricted throughout April for both Chileans and resident foreigners. For exceptional cases - indicated as fundamental for the country, essential for health or exit without return - a permit will be established that will be housed in the Virtual Police Station. 

In addition, the entry of non-resident foreigners, with the exception of those who have the status of countries without community transmission of the virus, will be prohibited for 30 days, starting from Monday, April 5, according to the list prepared by the Organization. World Health Organization (WHO). 

Meanwhile, and on the eve of the long weekend that is coming, Martorell reported that the sanitary cordon arranged in the RM, Valparaíso, Gran Concepción and Temuco-Padre las Casas is coming ahead at 1:00 p.m.

Other containment measures

In addition to the restrictions on the border, the authorities reported other modifications aimed at protecting the population's health.

Thus, it was established that, as of Monday, April 5, the curfew will begin at 9:00 p.m. throughout the national territory. Individual travel permits will also be limited, and only one weekend permit may be used in quarantined communes

Work activities will also be limited, through the modification of the definition of "essential good", categorized for communes in phases 1 and 2 of the Step-by-Step Plan as essential elements for subsistence (food, medicines, hygiene and hygiene, articles essential for the operation of the home).
