Mexico maintains the expectation of arrival of international tourists

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) reported that due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the global demand for travel remained very weak in January of this year, so some countries show significant reductions in the arrival of international tourists.
In this way, while Mexico suffered a reduction of 49.3 percent in its arrival of international tourists, compared to January 2020, when the pandemic had not yet been declared, Thailand registered a fall of 99.8 percent; Austria, 98.5 percent; Argentina, 97.5 percent; Germany, 92.3 percent; Turkey, 71.4 percent; and Spain, minus 89.5 percent.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) indicated that during the first two months of 2021, 3.5 million international tourists arrived in our country, which left an economic spill of 1,555 million dollars, of which 1.2 million passengers arrived via aerial.
Likewise, in the first two months of 2020, Mexico registered the arrival of 7.6 million tourists from abroad, with an economic benefit of four thousand 245 million dollars. Of these, 3.7 million tourists arrived by air.
He added that in the January-February 2021 period, the average spending of border tourists who entered Mexico by car was $ 72.5; while that of pedestrians was $ 59.8.
While in the period January-February 2020, the average spending of border tourists who entered by car amounted to 64.4 dollars and that of pedestrians to 53.8 dollars.
In turn, as of February of this year, the balance of the Tourism Balance showed a positive balance of 1,214 million dollars; while last year in the same period the balance was three thousand 182 million dollars.
Secretary Torruco Marqués added that this year, the percentage of hotel occupancy in the first four weeks, corresponding to January, was 26.8 percent; from week five to eight, corresponding to February, it was 26.5 percent; and from nine to twelve, corresponding to March, it was 34.8 percent. While the thirteenth week, corresponding to Holy Week, reached 42.7 occupancy, while Easter 2020 was only 2.7 percent.
Finally, he specified that the expectations for 2021 are the arrival of 24 million 800 thousand international tourists, with a foreign exchange capture of eleven thousand 500 million dollars.
