Chilean government extends border closure for another 30 days
The Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza, reported that, as happened in April, during May Chileans - except in exceptional cases - will not be able to leave Chile and non-resident foreigners will not be able to enter
In a new balance regarding the situation of the coronavirus pandemic that affects the country, the Health authorities announced that the border closure measure that was established last April will be extended for another month, with the aim of containing the spread of the virus in Chile. Thus, it was explained by the Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza, who stated that “the borders are kept closed for Chileans and foreigners during the month of May. Chileans will not be able to leave, except for extraordinary situations; and foreigners will not be able to enter our country ”.
The health report also gave account of some modifications that will be made to the Transition stage (Phase 2) of the Step-by-Step Plan, making it more restrictive. In this way, the communes that are and enter this phase in the coming days must maintain total confinement on weekends and holidays, as it is until now. However, gyms and casinos will not be able to function and sports activities cannot be carried out in closed spaces.
In addition, the capacity in shopping centers was modified, with the aim of avoiding crowds, allowing a maximum of one person every ten square meters.
Regarding other places that may begin to operate in the Transition phase, such as bars and restaurants, the health authority reiterated that they are only allowed to serve on terraces, with a maximum of four people per table and until 8:00 p.m., considering that the Curfew starts at 21:00.
