April 30, 2021

The US firm will reactivate operations in San José and Liberia as of June 6

The US airline Southwest Airlines will resume flights to the Juan Santamaría and Daniel Oduber Quirós international airports as of June 6, offering a daily route from Houston, Texas to San José and Liberia, as well as a weekly flight from Baltimore, Maryland to Guanacaste. .

“With the return of SouthWest we completed the return of all North American airlines that flew to Costa Rica before the pandemic. This commits us to continue with the strict application of the twenty or so health protocols that correspond to tourist activities, ”said Gustavo J. Segura, Minister of Tourism.

There are nine airlines that connect our country with the United States, our main tourist source market: Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Alaska, American Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit, Sun Country, Frontier (as of July 1) and Southwest (as of June 06).

On the return of the Southwest airline César Jaramillo, general manager of CORIPORT stated:

“We are excited to announce the return of the Southwest airline starting June 6, which will fly daily from the city of Houston, in addition to a weekly operation from Baltimore to Guanacaste. This is one more example of the efforts of the joint work that the government authorities and private companies carry out to reactivate the economy. At CORIPORT we continue to comply with all established health protocols and provide facilities such as taking covid-19 tests to passengers so that they feel safe and comfortable while passing through the Guanacaste Airport ”.

“The return of Southwest is another example of the purpose set out by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute with the support of AERIS, to recover the operations and airlines that connect the world with Costa Rica, through the Juan Santamaría Airport. This good understanding is what allows serving the airlines with excellence, strengthening connections with the main attraction market for the country and thereby offering passengers more travel alternatives between the SJO and the city of Houston. The Juan Santamaría International Airport is prepared to receive a greater traffic of travelers with the adherence to the sanitary protocols that guarantee a safe travel experience ”, added Rafael Mencía, Executive Director of AERIS, administrator of the Juan Santamaría International Airport.

In March, Costa Rica received 62,370 tourists from the United States for a total entry of 135,490 people from that country in the first quarter of 2021.

Southwest began its routes to Costa Rican territory in 2015, the first Central American destination to which he flew.
