Marriott calls for conservation of bees
Marriott International Reserva Conchal and Blue Zones Nicoya call for the conservation and protection of this insect, which plays an important role in the environment
Within the framework of World Bee Day, Marriott International Reserva Conchal and Blue Zones Nicoya call for the conservation and protection of this insect, which plays an important role in the environment, as it is the largest pollinator in the world, a fundamental task for the existence of fruits and vegetables.
In addition, bees produce honey, which is a food rich in vitamins and minerals, and the only one in the world that is preserved indefinitely.
Aware of the importance of these insects, Westin Reserva Conchal, W Costa Rica and Reserva Conchal in alliance with the national brand Blue Zones Nicoya started an apiary, in order to protect the bees, obtain a high quality product and at the same time , generate employment for people from neighboring communities.
The project houses about 5 million bees, distributed in 60 hives; which are in charge of pollinating approximately 3,000 hectares of forest and, therefore, contribute to the continuity of the different ecosystems.
“Due to the characteristics of Reserva Conchal in Santa Cruz de Guanacaste, a unique honey is generated in this apiary due to its slight acidity, characteristic of mangrove pollen, and because of its color, which varies according to the flowering of the forest in each time of the year. This is also an example of sustainable linkages, by developing a project that generates jobs, preserves the flora of the site and exposes both its process and the product to the population ”, said Gabriela Meza, manager of Environment, Health and Community Relations of Reserva Conchal.
Another characteristic of this honey is that it is a 100% natural product, a raw honey, that is, it goes from the honeycomb to the container, without going through the pasteurization process, so as not to lose nutrients in the final product.
The honey produced is purchased by the Westin Reserva Conchal and W Costa Rica hotels for their restaurants and as an amenity for some guests. It is also possible to purchase it at the property stores and on the Blue Zones Nicoya website.
“It is a priority for us to offer our guests quality products, natural and, as far as possible, local. At the same time, supporting projects that appeal to the conservation of flora and fauna that guests can enjoy around the hotels and benefit the community where we are located, this is a fundamental part of our Marriott International Serve360 program ”, said Hernán Binaghi , complex general manager of both hotels.
The province of Guanacaste is the largest producer of honey in the country.
