Costa Rica achieved in May the highest number of international visitors since reopening
The income of American travelers has been the highest so far this year and represents 73% of the same month of 2019
In May, 90,321 tourists entered the country by air, being the month with the highest visitation figures since the total reopening of air borders on November 1, 2020.
The United States, the main source market for tourists to Costa Rica, consolidates its recovery and continues to increase, showing a hopeful improvement. In May, 72,329 American people entered, that is, 9,670 more than in April and almost double the number of travelers in January 2021, according to data from the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners analyzed by the ICT.
Tourist visitation from the US in May 2021 represents 73% of the tourists from that country who visited Costa Rica in May 2019 prior to the pandemic, which provides a positive signal that our main issuing market maintains its interest in our tourist destination.
“The signs of recovery in the US market are very relevant and join the recent announcements of the return of all the airlines that connect our country with the US, together with the notable increase in the vaccination of its citizens, a situation that strengthens the confidence to travel to destinations such as Costa Rica ”highlighted Gustavo J. Segura, Rector of Tourism.
Segura foresees that the figures will continue to improve in the coming weeks when the summer holidays begin in the North American market and in Europe.
With the return of the Southwest airline last Sunday, June 6, to the international airports Juan Santamaría and Daniel Oduber Quirós, the return of all the airlines that connect our country with the United States is completed, our main source market for tourists: Delta Airlines , United Airlines, Alaska, American Airlines, JetBlue, Spirit, Sun Country and Southwest. In addition, as of July 1, Frontier will be added.
This news generates positivism especially because by July 4, according to the projections of the US Government, there will be 200 million vaccinated US citizens, crucial to regain the confidence of travelers in international tourism.

To keep Costa Rica in the minds of potential American tourists, precisely the Costa Rican Tourism Institute launched a promotional video on the Visit Costa Rica website and social networks.
The material is part of the Only the Essentials campaign and uses images of the country that invite tourists to get excited, to travel again, and re-visit Costa Rica if they already know it; All in accordance with the corresponding protocols and taking advantage of the American population there is already a large group of people vaccinated, so they are more encouraged to travel. In the video, tourists are invited to carry out different activities with responsibility and hence the phrase “Let's get excited again” (“Let's get excited again”).
The messages used are a complement to the work carried out by North American influencers who visited the country in recent months.
So far in 2021, the country registers the total income of 270,478 tourists from the United States.
