July marked a new visitation record in the last 12 months with the arrival of 146,915 tourists. The United States remains the main source market

Costa Rica completed the first year of reopening its air border with extraordinary and encouraging numbers for the tourism sector. Between August 2020 and July 2021, 766,303 travelers arrived, that is, 49.88% of the historical figures of the previous year for those same months.
July, with the entry of 146,915 by air, was the best month of the last 12, reaching a new visitation record on the road to recovery.
Meanwhile, the United States is consolidated as the main engine for the recovery of tourists by air with an entry of 549 752 visitors, followed by Europe, with 110 907. This is demonstrated by data from the General Directorate of Migration and Foreigners analyzed by the ICT .
"With the data and the perspective that time gives, I vindicate a decision that was a turning point and of success in the beginning of the recovery process of our tourism industry: the reopening of the air border after five months of zero season", Gustavo J. Segura, Rector Minister of Tourism.
"It was a wise decision that we arrived at after a thorough analysis, an essential step that places us today in a strategic present and future position to safeguard one of the most important industries for the economy and social progress of the country, tourism", mentioned Segura.
July showed rise of tourists
The arrival of international travelers continues on an upward curve, with July being the month with the best figures and surpassing June by more than 29 thousand tourists. While in June (117,527 by air) the threshold of 100,000 tourists was exceeded for the first time since the reopening, July approached 150,000 for a total of 146,915 tourists.
Tourism from the United States increased again in July with a total of 109,225 visitors, while in June 94,750 Americans visited us.
Together with the recovery in the number of visitors, the country is one of the few destinations in the world that, despite the global uncertainty that looms over the markets, has recovered all the pre-pandemic airlines from the United States, and has added new airlines such as Frontier and the Spanish Iberojet, as well as new routes to and from cities such as San Francisco, Denver and Austin.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the country closed air traffic to international tourism on March 18, 2020, causing for the first time an unprecedented “zero season” for five months. The air borders reopened on August 1, 2020 to the European Union and on August 3, 2020 the first flight with tourists from Madrid, Spain returned.

Since November 1, 2021, Costa Rica receives travelers from any country in the world, complying with the migration and health requirements established for each nation.
“There is still a long way to go and we must go together in the same direction as the public and private sector to open ourselves in the best way to the world, with firm steps, without abandoning our essence, always thinking about people's health, the conservation of the environment. , the search for fair and sustainable social progress, making this global pandemic an opportunity for a better future ”, concluded Segura.
