WTTC responds to the latest EU recommendations
According to the President and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council, reimposing restrictions is a step backwards and will only slow the recovery of the sector
Julia Simpson, President and CEO of WTTC said: “The protection of public health must remain the priority and the WTTC strongly supports security protocols to stop the spread of COVID-19. However, the EU recommendation to reimpose restrictions on US travelers is a step back and will only slow the recovery of the sector.
“With the high levels of vaccination in both the US and the EU, we should consider opening up travel between these two major economies. We need a common set of rules that recognize global vaccines and eliminate the need to quarantine people with a negative COVID result.
“The United States is a key source market for many EU Member States, such as France, Italy, Germany and Ireland, and tourism will be critical to restoring normal life and tens of thousands of jobs both in the United States and elsewhere. the European Union".
"Rather than imposing more harmful travel restrictions, the EU should encourage member states to use its innovative COVID digital certificate to safely restore international travel, critical to the European economy."
