Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council said: "As we rebuild a stronger sector and grow, we must ensure that the recovery includes us all".

Within the framework of World Tourism Day, the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) reiterates the important value that the sector has for the economy, as well as for the lives of all those who depend on this activity, for which it did again a call for the private and public sector to continue working, as well as society as a whole for its speedy recovery.

This date is of great importance, after the sector has experienced a devastating effect during the pandemic. According to the latest WTTC Economic Impact Report, during 2020, Travel and Tourism contributed 5.5% to world GDP, a decrease of 4.9% compared to 2019. In addition, there was the loss of more than 62 million jobs in the sector.

Travel and Tourism has a great participation in the generation of wealth in the world economy and impacts in all sectors and activities, as well as every life on the planet. Create job opportunities, community empowerment, cultural exchange, wildlife preservation, and much more.

It is also one of the most diverse sectors, employing people of all socioeconomic backgrounds, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity, and includes 53% women and 30% young people. In addition, it is responsible for generating one in every 4 new jobs.

The WTTC noted that this year's theme for World Tourism Day is "Tourism for Inclusive Growth", which highlights the positive impact of inclusive tourism for women, youth, small businesses and rural communities.

After a year in which social justice issues, such as institutional racism, garnered more attention than ever, it becomes clear why the future requires inclusive growth.

Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the WTTC noted that “As we rebuild a stronger sector and grow, we must ensure that the recovery includes each and every one of us. We must not leave any nation, person or animal behind, as we benefit from tourism to build a world that future generations can enjoy and prosper. "

"Another reason, why I think this is so important, is because most of the people who work in travel and tourism are women," Simpson added.

Likewise, after an extremely difficult time for the management and impact of COVID-19, the Council emphasizes the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors, in order to accelerate the recovery of the travel and tourism sector, an engine key to investment and economic growth worldwide.

The WTTC and all its members recognize the power of tourism, and reiterate its commitment to make Travel & Tourism drive economic recovery, as well as inclusive and sustainable growth around the world.
