The number of US tourists that visited Costa Rica in September is close to 2019 levels
The main outbound market for travelers to the Central American country Costa Rica shows an improvement that could increase during the last quarter of the year with the opening of new air routes and the start of the high season
Costa Rica received 46,804 tourists from the United States of America by air in September, that is, 93.3% of the amount registered for the same month of the year prior to the pandemic (2019), showing a robust recovery of the main issuing market for travelers to Costa Rica.
The figure would grow in the last quarter of this 2021 with the inauguration scheduled for next November of new air routes such as that of American Airlines from the city of Chicago, Illinois to the Juan Santamaría International Airport and Guanacaste Airport (Daniel Oduber Quirós), together with the route Austin, Texas - Guanacaste Airport.
Also the low-cost airline Frontier will fly from Orlando, Florida to Guanacaste prior to the start of the high season.
"The United States is the spearhead of our recovery and also Europe, whose recovery has been slower, shows a noticeable improvement with the total arrival of 14,748 people the previous month, representing almost 70% of the entry of tourists from the old continent of what was received prior to the pandemic, ”said Gustavo J. Segura, Rector Minister of Tourism.
Spain, for example, is getting closer and closer to the pre-pandemic number with the arrival in September of 4,220 people, that is, just over 80% of the number of visitors who arrived in the same period two years ago. In addition to the increase in visitation from the Spanish market, from Germany the entry of 2,236 tourists was recorded last September, 65% of the pre-Covid figure.
The total number of international arrivals by air in September 2021 was 77,599 tourists, which means 70% of the numbers in September 2019 and by all routes (air, sea and land) was 85 183 visitors.
The Guanacaste airport was close to matching the number of tourists registered in September 2019 with 17,163 tourists during the past month, 92% of the pre-pandemic record. Through the Juan Santamaría, 60,435 tourists arrived, 65% of the income given two years ago.
From January to September 2021, Costa Rica received 878,574 tourists, of which 836,190 did so by air.
