The joint actions will aim to recognize the added value that cultural itineraries offer to the development of sustainable tourism, the safeguarding of cultural heritage and intercultural dialogue. The collaboration will also highlight the potential of the routes to boost social, economic and cultural development, with benefits for both Europe and partner countries by strengthening cultural and historical ties.

International Year of the Creative Economy, 2021
The two organizations will collaborate, firstly, in the field of creative tourism, to show good practices, in line with the International Year of the Creative Economy, 2021, and also to advance in the promotion of the destinations included in the Extended Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

UNWTO Secretary General Zurab Pololikashvili said: "Tourism has the capacity to create employment and other development opportunities in places that cross cultural itineraries, as well as protect and promote cultural heritage and celebrate creativity."

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić added: "The cultural itineraries program plays an important role in promoting Europe's rich cultural heritage, as well as being an effective tool for fostering intercultural dialogue and transnational cooperation.

We are delighted that the World Tourism Organization is bringing its expertise to the program based on this memorandum of understanding. "

Improving accessibility
Within the framework of this collaboration, UNWTO and the Council of Europe will use their particular knowledge and technical capabilities to further develop cultural itineraries, through research, training and policy development. Particular attention will be paid to the development of maps of cultural itineraries and the promotion of greater accessibility for people with disabilities and specific access requirements.
