In the framework of the twenty-fourth meeting of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), in Madrid, Spain, the general administrator of the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), Iván Eskildsen, completed a busy work schedule which included the signing of an agreement with the Spanish company Wakalua Innovation hub, with which Panama achieved the headquarters of the regional event "Challenge startups", to be held in 2022 with scope in Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico and also the creation of a tourist innovation center.
Eskildsen stressed that the tourism innovation center will be an office for the promotion of entrepreneurship in the industry sector that will help stimulate the economy, as part of the focus of the actions of the government of President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen.
The agreement with Wakalua Innovation hub, a company founded in 2019 with the collaboration of UNWTO and the Globalia business group, indicates that the regional event will be held in the first half of 2022 and will be aimed mainly at supporting and discovering “startups”, which are innovation competitions for transforming tourist products of the tourist offer, with which the aim is to strengthen the industry sector with a new inventory of transformative experiences.
The initiative, which will be part of the activities that Panama will promote when it assumes the Pro Tempore presidency of the Central American Tourism Integration Secretariat (SITCA) next year, will also facilitate the process of establishing the tourism innovation center with international projection, to In order to turn the country into a hub of knowledge and technological innovation in the tourism field, with which the sustainable growth of the industry sector in our country and in the region will be promoted.
The projects that arise from this agreement will benefit leaders, leaders, entrepreneurs, investors and local communities of the sector throughout the country, linked to innovative and technology-based companies, micro and small companies in the tourism production chain, destination management entities and tourism promotion.
The work agenda of the general administrator of the ATP also included the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Minister of Tourism of Paraguay, Sofía Montiel, with which both countries undertake to carry out joint actions for the promotion, marketing and sustainable development of tourism , to contribute to improving the quality of life of the populations, as well as generating a diversification of the tourist offer, investment promotion and the implementation of good practices. Minister Montiel assumed the Presidency of the UNWTO Americas Commission in the General Assembly, with whom Administrator Eskildsen will coordinate actions for the benefit of the region in his capacity as Pro Tempore President of SITCA.
During the UNWTO General Assembly and before more than a thousand delegates from around the world, the agreement of Panama as a pilot country for the United Nations NetZero Tourism Fund was highlighted, highlighting the leadership of Panama on issues of climate action, community empowerment, sustainability and innovation.
On the other hand, Eskildsen gave interviews to the Spanish media to promote the Panama destination (National Radio of Spain, Portal Trends Today and Traveling Magazine) and met with Vicente Fenollar, executive president of the global tour operator Ávoris, in order to promote the destination in its more than 1,500 points of sale.
In addition, with the Charge d'Affaires of the Embassy of Panama in Spain, Allen Sellers Lara, he inaugurated in Madrid the sculpture of the "Panamanian Menina" on the occasion of the celebration of the Bicentennial of the Independence of Panama from Spain, whose figure shows through from an original and colorful design by the Panamanian artist Juan Valenzuela, the biodiversity of the destination Panama, as well as the important historical and cultural heritage it possesses.
