Income of Canadian tourists in Costa Rica rebounded in November
By air, 10,566 tourists from Canada arrived last month, representing about 60% of travelers from the same period of 2019
The return to the country of the four Canadian flag airlines was clearly manifested in the international visitation last November. Costa Rica registered the entry of 10,566 tourists from Canada, a figure that represents almost 60% of Canadian travelers who arrived in November 2019, according to data from the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration analyzed by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT ).
"This result demonstrates our solid positioning and the taste of Canadians for the Costa Rica destination," said Gustavo Alvarado, Rector Minister of Tourism. "It is an ideal rebound to strengthen the recovery at the beginning of the high season," added the chief.
Canadian airlines restarted their flights to Costa Rica the previous October, after a seven-month absence as a result of internal decisions by the Canadian government to contain the pandemic in that country.
Currently, Air Canada, Sunwing and Westjet airlines offer weekly flights to the Juan Santamaría International Airport and Guanacaste Airport, while Air Transat will do it to Guanacaste starting this December 13 and 17 from the cities of Montreal and Toronto, respectively.
According to ICT data, in 2019 more than 218,000 Canadian tourists entered the country, representing more than 9% of all international travelers. Canada is the second source market for tourists to Costa Rica after the United States.
From January to November 2021, 1,130,377 international tourist arrivals were registered by all routes, allowing 40% of the number of travelers who visited Costa Rica to be recovered before the COVID-19 pandemic and exceeding by more than 193 000 travelers registered in the first 11 months of 2020.
The airway continues with the momentum and growth shown during this year and that is why during November the Juan Santamaría International Airport recorded 98 337 international tourist arrivals and the Daniel Oduber Airport Quirós in Guanacaste 42,761 tourists, that is, 68% and 91% respectively of the arrivals during the same pre-pandemic month to each air terminal.
Finally, Europe and North America are the regions with the most tourists entering Costa Rica between January and November 2021 with 172,790 and 794,645 visitors, respectively.
