On Saturday, January 8, the Atchugarry Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA) was inaugurated, located on the grounds of the Pablo Atchugarry foundation, in Manantiales

One of the main axes of MACA is that it is a museum open to visitors, who will be able to access it for free, as well as for artists, collectors, etc.

In addition, the idea of Atchugarry is to transfer the work of artists "who have never been seen in Uruguay", as well as new technologies and position MACA as a destination for exhibitions that do not usually reach South America.

In this space, the Christo & Jeanne-Claude exhibition is exhibited for the first time in South America.

Likewise, MACA will house the permanent Atchugarry collection, which contains more than 100 works by Latin American, American and European artists, including Julio Le Parc, Carlos Cruz Diez, Joaquín Torres García, Ernesto Neto and Carmelo Arden Quin.

MACA is a building project of more than 5,000 square meters, designed by the Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, who also participated in the inauguration.

The building is located in an environment surrounded by nature, where the foundation and Atchugarry himself attach great importance to the planting of trees and plants, a sign that it is possible to go in another direction, with the guarantee to the new generations of a planet more clean and with less pollution. The idea is that the visitor can also connect with nature, which currently houses the artist's sculpture garden.

On the other hand, MACA's cultural extension program will offer film series, conferences, seminars and workshops, in which historians and critics from the region and the world will participate, with artistic, educational and cultural activities for all audiences.

Present at the inauguration were the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, the Minister of Tourism, Tabaré Viera, the Director General of the Secretariat, Ignacio Curbelo, the Mayor of Maldonado, Enrique Antía, among other government authorities and former presidents.

The president congratulated Atchugarry on the undertaking and expressed his personal admiration. “I always admired the serenity of the greats. The greats show that they are, with their generosity ”, highlighted Lacalle Pou.

In turn, Lacalle Pou said that “it is a very special day for those of us who passed by here years ago, and there was nothing. Whoever transgresses the limits of reality with imagination, saw that here could be what we are all enjoying today ”, he added, referring to Pablo Atchugarry, artist and promoter of the project.

MACA is located at kilometer 4,500 of Route 104, in Manantiales, Maldonado department.
