During 2021 Mexico has strengthened its connectivity
Last year, 72 new international air routes were created to Mexican destinations
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that in 2021 72 new international air routes were created in our country, through which 256 thousand passengers were transported on 2,810 flights, estimating an economic benefit of 285 millions of dollars.
Likewise, he asserted that, in addition, the AFAC reported that in fact 290 new routes were authorized last year, of which the 72 mentioned have already entered into operation and the remaining 218 are in the process of being started. In this stage those of the Mundo Maya Region are included, which may be launched this year.
Secretary Torruco Marqués also referred to the post-pandemic recovery of airlines in the 2019-2021 period. He stated that of the foreign airlines that operated international flights, the following stood out for their recovery in 2021: American Airline and United Airlines. In that year, American Airlines transported 4 million 817 thousand 369 passengers, 7.8 percent more than in 2019 and 98.2 percent more than in 2020. While United Airlines transported 4 million 160 thousand 131 passengers, with a growth of 9.5 percent and 147.2 percent for 2019 and 2020, respectively.
Regarding the 5 Mexican airlines that operated international flights in the 2019-2021 period, they stand out for their recovery in the past year: Volaris, Viva Aerobus and Aeromar. Volaris transported 3 million 495 thousand 657 passengers, 7.4 percent more than in 2019 and 85.3 percent more than in 2020. For its part, Viva Aerobus carried 1 million 620 thousand 943 passengers, with a growth of 209.4 percent and 317.4 percent for 2019 and 2020, respectively; Aeromar transported 80,244 passengers, 492.6 percent and 679.7 percent, for the same years.
Finally, the official pointed out that of the 9 national airlines that operated domestic flights between 2019 and 2021, Volaris, Viva Aerobus and Aeroméxico stand out for the number of passengers transported. In 2021, Volaris transported 16 million 346 thousand 118 passengers, 6.8 percent more than in 2019 and 70.6 percent more than in 2020; Viva Aerobus carried 11 million 213 thousand 146 passengers, with a growth of 14.5 percent and 87.4 percent for 2019 and 2020, respectively. He pointed out that Aeroméxico transported 6 million 178 thousand 521 passengers, 26.1 percent and 114.2 percent more than in 2019 and 2020, respectively.
