Despite the fact that Ómicron has delayed the start of this year, a strong recovery is observed in reservations globally

The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) assured that the travel and tourism industry will perform better this year, since a strong recovery in reservations is observed globally.

During the participation of the WTTC in the framework of FITUR 2022, the agency estimated that the incidence of cases by Omicron could continue to grow in the coming weeks, although there is a possibility that they will reduce rapidly as of March.

“We are confident that 2022 will be a much stronger year than the previous one, and we will begin to see a more sustained recovery in the sector, Omicron has had an impact at the beginning of this year but according to scientists the symptoms are less severe and the hospitalizations and deaths are down. That is why governments must remove travel restrictions and allow vaccinated passengers to travel freely”, said Julia Simpson, President and CEO of the WTTC.

According to booking data from WTTC strategic partner Forward Keys, it shows a strong recovery and increase in bookings for Easter across Europe, with an increase of more than 200% compared to 2021. In addition, bookings of summer will increase more than 80%. However, these results are still below pre-pandemic levels.

Under this report, Spain and Turkey are highlighted as the most popular destinations for European travelers in 2022.

On the other hand, international arrivals to Spain in the first quarter of 2022 increased by 320% compared to the previous year.

Travel demand is very high around the world and as restrictions continue to be relaxed and consumer confidence grows, a significant increase in bookings is expected in the coming months.

Given this fact, the WTTC assured that governments should focus on simplifying the rules so that travel is fast and efficient, which will mean a greater economic recovery.

Despite the travel restrictions in place, the WTTC projects that 2022 will be a much stronger year than the previous one, in which a more sustained recovery in the travel and tourism sector will begin to be seen.
