The platform puts the country at the forefront in the use of new technologies in capturing information

Through an easy and free access platform, businessmen and entrepreneurs in the sector, tourism associations, municipalities, academia, national and international organizations and the media will be able to access Big Data Internal Tourism, a tool that provides statistical information on the trips that carried out by residents in Chile throughout the national territory and which will be available 24 hours a day at .

The new metrics will be added to the results of the information already existing on the platform, in which the behavior of internal tourism can be measured from January 2019 to November 2021, giving way to the analysis of internal tourist flows in the pandemic context, comparing it with a regular year. The results of this methodology will be added to Data Turismo Chile, to complement the information already available regarding receptive tourism.

The Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism, Lucas Palacios, stated that "the incorporation of Big Data is tremendous news for the more than 540,000 people and families who live from tourism in our country, for the more than 183,000 companies with activities related to tourism, for investors, community, regional and country authorities who want to make more and better decisions to promote it. And for the same tourists. It is a great zoom to the Chilean tourist, precise and in real time, which puts us at the forefront of accurate information for all”.

Meanwhile, the Undersecretary of Tourism, José Luis Uriarte, pointed out that “the implementation of this platform is an element that contributes to the positioning of tourism as an economic sector. This is an effort that we have been developing for years to provide the sector with reliable, robust and up-to-date information, with the aim that people linked to tourism, at all levels, can have data at hand and thus make better decisions. . It is an excellent tool that will help the development of public policies and investments focused on the territory, which is extremely necessary in a context of reactivation.”

Another aspect pointed to by the use of big data in tourism is the digital transformation of the sector and in relation to that, the national director of Sernatur, Andrea Wolleter, expressed that "this is very beneficial, since it puts Chile at the forefront in the use of new information capture technologies. It is an innovative method of obtaining official data in tourism that values the analysis of available information and the intensive use of data, as a support for decision-making, supplying the need for short-term information”.

Big data application for domestic tourism

The use of big data becomes a fundamental tool for the design of strategies in the process of reactivating a sector of the economy that has been severely impacted by the health crisis, especially since domestic tourism will be the central axis that will drive the resumption of tourist activity in Chile.

The platform has a wide reach and encompasses various players in the sector. The level of detail of the information contributes to localities, municipalities, regions and the general public regarding access to centralized and standardized information that is easy to understand and always available on the website.

This is the first time that the country's official statistics have been published with big data, which complements the surveys and administrative records of tourism statistics. This is information with state-of-the-art technology, available for decision-making by SMEs and tour operators in the country, which will allow defining initiatives, projects and public policies thanks to timely, reliable and robust data. In this way, the use of this technology will allow decision-making to be directed in a much better way, whether public or private.
