Brazil invites you to discover its 23 UNESCO World Heritage Sites
Everyone already knows that Brazil has countless natural and cultural riches, but some of them are internationally recognized for their inestimable value to humanity. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) identifies and catalogs these attractions in order to protect and preserve them for future generations.
They are divided into Cultural, Natural and Mixed Heritage of Humanity - the latter when a single place has unique characteristics of both segments. World Heritage sites, as they are also called, can be buildings, monuments, landscapes or entire cities. Currently, there are 23 of these places spread across Brazil, including 15 Cultural, seven Natural and one Mixed.
“It is very important that Brazilians know the riches of their own country, which are often in their city, in their neighborhood or in a neighboring municipality. The cultural and natural wealth of Brazil is unquestionable. We have the capacity to have many other World Heritage Sites in all Brazilian states”, highlighted the Minister of Tourism, Gilson Machado Neto.
“The Brazilian cultural heritage is of fundamental importance for the memory, for the identity of a people. In Brazilian culture, its heritage was duly rescued and returned to the simple people and their civilizational heritage. Our culture is beautiful and every Brazilian should know our history”, declared the Special Secretary for Culture, Mario Frias.
The president of the Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (Iphan), Larissa Peixoto, explains that the Institute is responsible for the conservation, safeguarding and monitoring of Brazilian cultural assets inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and that the country has other active registrants nationwide.
“We are very proud to have so many UNESCO World Heritage Sites. At the federal level, we have many other assets protected by the IPHAN of inestimable value for Brazilian culture and that have great potential to generate employment and income through cultural tourism”, he pointed out.
