Employment in tourism registers an increase of 22.9% in Chile
According to the information released by the National Institute of Statistics, there are 538,399 people employed in the sector
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) released the employment figures in the Characteristic Activities of Tourism (ACT) for the moving quarter October-November-December 2021.
According to the data, in the period measured, 538,399 employed persons were registered in the ACTs, a figure that is +22.9% higher than that registered in the same moving quarter of 2020.
In this regard, the undersecretary of Tourism, José Luis Uriarte, pointed out that “this is a figure that accounts, once again, for a process of recovery of employment in the sector, which has been registered for several months. Today we have 100,000 more employees than last year, which is good news considering that there are various territories of the country that live from tourism and that boost the economies of their localities. We hope that the summer period will allow us to recover all or most of the jobs that remain to reach pre-pandemic figures.”
In the current measurement, the recovery of female employment in the sector stands out, which increased 44.1% in twelve months, reaching 251,396 women employed in tourism nationwide.
The increase in those employed in accommodation and food services is also revealed, which in the measured mobile quarter registered an increase of 30.7% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The national director of Sernatur, Andrea Wolleter, highlighted that “in the latest installments of this measurement we have noticed that female employment has experienced a clear recovery in the context of the pandemic. In the last twelve months, the female segment recorded a growth of 44.1%, with which we reached 251,396 women employed in tourist activities in the country, which shows us how relevant tourism is as a source of employment for them ”.
The Tourism Barometer, a monthly publication document of the Undersecretary of Tourism, also delivered the country's receptive tourism figures for the year 2021.
According to the data, last year, still impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, closed with a total of 190,022 arrivals of tourists residing abroad, which corresponds to a variation of -83.0% compared to the year 2020 and -95.8% compared to 2019.
During the last month of the year, the entry of 72,114 international tourists was registered, a figure that compared to the same month of 2020, represents an increase of +116.8% and a 24-month variation of -83.3%.
