Costa Rica participates from April 5 to 7 in the tenth edition of the World Travel Market Latin America (WTM) fair, the main world event for the travel and tourism industry in Latin America, at the Expo Center Norte in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
Costa Rica has not participated in the event since April 2019 due to the pandemic and this edition marks the return of the country together with six Costa Rican companies to a Latin American tourism fair. There, in addition to showing Costa Rica as a destination committed to sustainability, an ideal place to reconnect with the essentials of life, it will seek to establish contacts with professional buyers from wholesale companies, airlines, travel agencies, luxury products, among others. others, so that they offer our destination to their clients.
“The decrease in the number of cases of Covid-19 in the world and the gradual elimination of measures, allow us to see an increase in the number of trips and the reactivation of tourism promotion events, for this reason the participation of the country and of national companies exhibiting their services.
“Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay have been part of our priority markets in Latin America. Before the pandemic we had connecting flights with Avianca, Copa and LATAM and during the health crisis, despite still being far from recovering existing air connectivity. In 2019, we observed a growing flow of tourists from that market, which is why it is important to continue carrying out actions to continue attracting them and increasing the number of visitors from that region,” said Ireth Rodríguez, head of ICT promotion.
The ICT has confirmed 30 business appointments with businessmen from Brazil, Argentina and the United States, in addition, during the second half of this year a training will be held for 50 travel agents from the Brazilian market on Costa Rica.
The priority markets for ICT in South America are Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, in fact, in the eyes of Argentine tourism, Costa Rica is perceived as a destination, mainly, of sun and beach that allows combining other activities, while The Brazilian market is attracted by surfing, beaches, visits to national parks and volcanoes, however, it is intended to expand the positioning of our country as a place with multiple outdoor activities, without crowds and in permanent proximity to the city. nature.
The Costa Rican tourism companies Meridianos Travel Agency, Best of Costa Rica, Costa Rica Top Tours, Destination Costa Rica DMC, Destination Services Costa Rica and Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge participate in WTM 2022.
To enter the fair it is necessary to have completed the vaccination schedule with at least two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine and the use of the mask is optional; At the ICT stand, the application of health protocols is maintained.
According to data from the General Directorate of Migration and Immigration analyzed by the ICT, during 2021 a total of 57,663 tourists entered by air from South America, of these, 11,503 tourists came from Brazil, 8,058 from Argentina , 1,764 from Uruguay and 4,898 from Chile. 
Most of the seats from South America to our country are provided by connecting flights from Colombia and Peru, particularly the former. 
In the first two months of the year, Colombia contributed 82% and Peru 18% thanks to the flights operated by Avianca, an airline that on March 28 inaugurated three direct routes from San José to Quito, Ecuador; Medellin and Cartagena, in Colombia.
According to the organization of the WTM, this year 94% of the buyers at the fair come from Latin America and 6% from other regions of the world, with the majority being the Brazilian public, followed by America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa. , Middle East and Asia. At the start of the fair, 50 buyers from the international market, 550 travel agents and 1,000 premium buyers from the Brazilian market are registered, although it is expected to exceed that number by the end of the event.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the ICT has maintained the presence and promotion of the destination in virtual and face-to-face fairs such as the ITB Berlin Now 2021 in Germany; the World Travel Market (WTM) in London 2021, IMEX America in Las Vegas, USA 2021, Fitur in Madrid, Spain in 2021 and 2022, as well as the Seatrade Cruise Global in Miami, Florida, last September.
