The flow generated a spill of 3,556 million dollars, 44.6% below the figures for 2019


According to the analysis of border tourism, the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that in 2021 35 million 503 thousand people crossed into Mexico on the northern and southern borders, of which 21 million 687 thousand they were hikers and 13 million 816 thousand tourists.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) pointed out that from Mexico abroad the crossings were 24 million 53 thousand people, of which 21 million 293 thousand were hikers and 2 million 761 thousand tourists.

He indicated that in 2021, the size of the market, both entries and exits, was 59 million 557 thousand crossings; 72.2% were hikers and 27.8% tourists, and that a recovery of 55.9% is still missing to reach the level of 2019, when 135 million 70 thousand people were registered.

Torruco Marqués commented that in 2021, the total border flow generated a spill of 3 thousand 556 million dollars, which means that a recovery of 2 thousand 868 million dollars is still necessary, that is 44.6% to reach 6 thousand 424 million dollars raised in 2019.

He added that the main travel reasons for border hikers and tourists in 2021 were: Visiting family and friends, 39.7% of the total; followed by purchases, 26.8%; medical care, 13.8%; pleasure, 7.7%; work and business 6.0%; and other reasons, 6.0%.

During 2021 there are three entities that lead the flow of crossings on the northern border of the country with 93.3% of the total: Baja California, 58.6%; Tamaulipas, 22.3%; and Chihuahua, 12.4%, pointed out the Secretary of Tourism.

He specified that the main access points on the northern border in 2021 were: Tijuana-San Diego, BC., 42.4% of the total; Nuevo Laredo II "Juarez-Lincoln", Tamps., 11.4%; and Tijuana, Puerta México, BC., 6.9%.

The head of Sectur reported that in the first two months of 2022, 4 million 895 thousand people crossed into Mexico from the North and South borders, of which 3 million 71 thousand were hikers and one million 824 thousand tourists.

During January and February 2022, from Mexico abroad, the crossings were 4 million 801 thousand people, of which 4 million 233 thousand were hikers and 568 thousand tourists.

He stressed that in the first two months of 2022, the total border flow generated an economic spill of the order of 579 million dollars, which represented a growth of 13.0% compared to 2021, with an additional 43% still missing to reach the levels of 2019.

In the first two months of 2022, the main travel reasons among excursionists and border tourists are: Visiting family and friends, 38.1% of the total; purchases, 33.3%; medical care, 11.4%; pleasure, 6.0%; work and business, 3.8%; and other reasons 7.4%.
