Russia announced its intention to withdraw from the UNWTO
The announcement came before the beginning of the Extraordinary General Assembly that takes place at this time
In anticipation of its imminent expulsion for the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has requested its departure from the World Tourism Organization, a UN agency.
As soon as he heard the news, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili used Twitter to express himself in this regard, the official stated: "Our statutes are clear: promotion of peace tourism and universal respect for human rights. Only Members that comply with this can be part of the UNWTO".
The UNWTO must now carry out a process that will take a year to complete, even though the suspension is effective immediately.
The decision to hold an extraordinary assembly, unprecedented so far in the organization's history, was made at the UNWTO Executive Council held in the Spanish capital on March 8.
The council met at the request of member countries such as Colombia, Slovenia, Guatemala, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine, following the unilateral actions undertaken by Russia on Ukrainian territory.
