Sky Cana, from Dominican Republic to the world
The airline emerges as a great opportunity to enhance the connectivity of the Caribbean country in full swing of its tourism
During ASONAHORES DATE 2022, we had the chance to interview Frank Díaz González, CEO of Sky Cana, one of the companies with the greatest potential at the regional level. We share his answers below:
How did the foundation of the company arise and with what objectives?
I have been a pilot for 25 years and in 2014 we began the process with the Dominican authorities to obtain the necessary permit to operate aircraft. In the initial phase we applied for a medium aircraft with a 135 certificate and right now we are in the process of adapting to 121 for the aircraft that we currently have. That means that the operations we do are carried out in conjunction with sister airlines in the region.
We currently have four Airbus aircraft and one ATR72 in cargo configuration.
Last year we closed with some 126,000 passengers mobilized in the last period with more than 650 rotations.
How many employees does the company have today and to which destinations is it operating?
Today we have 165 direct employees and about 450 indirect employees. We fly to the United States, we operate in Colombia, Puerto Rico, Haiti, Cuba, Guatemala and Mexico. We have also carried out operations to Lima, Peru and Santiago de Chile.
What are the short-term plans regarding the incorporation of a new fleet?
We are currently in the process of finalizing the acquisition of new aircraft other than that of Airbus and we have concluded a negotiation to have a 737 Max to be able to carry out long-range operations and have non-stop flights to the Southern Cone in countries such as Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Bolivia. At the same time we are interested in flying to the west coast of the United States in destinations such as San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
For next year we have scheduled 371 operations from the Punta Cana Airport to the city of Miami. We will carry out 90 operations to the Airport of the Americas to the Puerto Plata Airport.
It is worth mentioning that the flights within our country are carried out with our airline Flynn Dominicana, it is a sister company that I also own. They are aircraft of up to 30 passengers.
