After two years of restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism is recovering its growth

Almost one million foreign tourists arrived in Brazil in the first four months of 2022, that is, 60% more than all who entered the country last year, when 596,700 international visitors were registered.

According to figures from the International Transit System (STI) of the Federal Police, the entry of tourists to Brazil increased 685% in the first four months of the year, compared to the same period in 2021. The trend exceeds the global average, considering that according to According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), there was a 130% increase in the number of tourists who went on vacation abroad in January 2022 compared to the same period in 2021.

“Our goal is to reach the level prior to the pandemic, when we receive almost seven million foreign visitors a year, and then we will dedicate ourselves to surpassing that mark,” announced Silvio Nascimento, president of the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion, EMBRATUR. "We will continue working, in synergy with the Federal Government and the Ministry of Tourism, and intensifying the promotion of Brazil abroad to bring even more international tourists, which in turn moves our economy and generates many direct and indirect jobs," he added. the official.

The indicators of the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, IBGE, for the first quarter of 2022 showed an expansion of more than 42% of tourist activities compared to the same period of 2021. The total spending of foreign travelers in Brazil also increased : in the first two months of this year, according to the balance of payments of the Central Bank, visitors spent US$ 781 million during their stay in the country, which represents an increase of 63% in relation to the US$ 480 million registered in the first two months of 2021.

One of the bets to attract visitors to the country are massive events; The Ministry of Tourism counts almost a thousand events throughout the country in the remainder of 2022, including the June festivities (traditional in the months of June and July), the Rock in Rio festival, Formula 1, the traditional Rio de Janeiro Reveillon and all year-end parties.

To summon the interest of travelers regarding Brazil, Embratur will launch three publicity campaigns for priority markets that are the Mercosur countries, the United States and Europe, in that order. The actions -which will be implemented during the second half of the year- include advertising, promotional trips for foreign journalists, participation in international fairs and road shows with operators, agents, entities and associations of the sector.

According to the forecasts of the English consulting firm Globaldata, Brazil will be able to recover the levels of international tourist flow that it had until March 2020 only in the year 2024. With this objective, the authorities have stimulated the recovery of air frequencies; In April this year, the number of flights reached 2,983, an increase of 191.21% compared to the same month in 2021. According to the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and the airlines, from January to April this year 122 flights were created or reactivated, to which 40 additional frequencies were added.

“Until March 2020, tourism represented 8% of the Brazilian GDP, which makes this one of the fundamental industries of the Brazilian economy. It is much more than our vocation - it is our duty - to work for the promotion of the attractions, the Brazilian cultural, natural and urban riches and place our destinations in the imagination of global consumers”, concluded the president of Embratur.
