Miguel Torruco Marqués reported that the country ranks 23rd in the world and 5th in the American continent with 197 congresses

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that Meeting Tourism plays a key role in the sector as it regulates the seasonality of tourist demand, guaranteeing hotel occupancy in low seasons and increasing spending average visitors.

The head of the Tourism Secretariat (Sectur) highlighted that before the pandemic, this segment represented a spill of 25 billion dollars, equivalent to 1.6% of the country's GDP; and generated around one million jobs and 30 million room nights per year, this is 18.8% of the occupied room nights in the country.

He indicated that in 2019, according to the criteria of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), there were more than 12,900 events that rotated across all continents, an amount that doubled every 10 years. The United States ranked first, with 947 conferences, followed by Germany, with 642, and Spain, with 595. Mexico ranked 23rd, reporting 197 conferences.

The Secretary of Tourism added that in the American continent, the United States is the leader; Canada is in second position with 315 meetings; Brazil in the third with 233; Argentina is fourth with 232 and Mexico is in fifth place.

“Mexico is a highly competitive country worldwide in the Meetings Tourism industry because it has an extensive infrastructure for holding congresses, incentive trips, conferences, conventions, meetings and exhibitions, in addition to excellent quality and warmth in the service”, commented Torruco Marqués.

He pointed out that the success of this tourism segment is also linked to the natural, cultural and gastronomic wealth of Mexico, which is one of the main megadiverse destinations in the world, ranking 5th, with 12% of the planet's biodiversity. .

"We have 15 thousand kilometers of coastline, 138 million hectares of forests and jungles, 905 thousand hectares of mangroves and 184 protected natural areas," he declared.

In this way, Meetings Tourism contributes to the development of other segments, as well as triggering economic spillovers for the benefit of more tourism service providers and communities, as part of the policy of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, whose purpose is to promote the diversification of the activity and make tourism a tool for social reconciliation.

Torruco Marqués stressed that Sectur is working hard so that Mexico returns to the levels reached in 2019 and even exceeds them, in order to reaffirm itself as a tourist power.

He stressed that 2022 is presented as a promising year since in the first four months, 16 million 600 thousand passengers were transported on domestic flights, 43.4% more than in the same period of 2021, and 1.4% above what was obtained in the first quarter of 2019.

In the case of international flights, 16 million 49 thousand passengers were transported, that is, 103% more than in 2021, and only 7.4% below what was registered in 2019.
