Outstanding recovery of Mexico in international tourist arrivals
The Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, reported that the income of foreign currency, from the first quarter of 2022 compared to that of 2019, Mexico is located, only below Turkey, with -3.9%
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that, compared to other nations, Mexico shows an outstanding recovery in foreign exchange income, in the first quarter of 2022, since it is only 3.9%, of what which it registered in the same period of 2019, only below Turkey.
With information from the Barometer of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), corresponding to the first quarter of 2022, the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) also highlighted that our country is in second position in terms of recovery of tourist arrivals international, since it is only 22.6% of the arrivals of the period January-March 2019, only after Turkey.
Torruco Marqués pointed out that in 2021, foreign exchange income from international tourism reached 602 billion dollars, which is equivalent to a growth of 4.4% in real terms compared to 2020.
He reported that in the first quarter of 2022, the percentage variation of foreign exchange income from tourism in Mexico was 3.9% lower than the same period in 2019, while Turkey had an increase of 17.4%, and France is still 9.8% below .
The Europe and Middle East regions posted the best results, with foreign exchange earnings rising 49.9% and 51.9%, respectively, from pre-pandemic levels in both regions, the Sectur head said.
He pointed out that tourism spending per capita on a global scale increased from one thousand 11.6 dollars in 2019, to one thousand 410 dollars per capita in 2021.
The head of Sectur specified that in the period January-March 2022, the arrival of international tourists totaled 117 million, this is 182.2% more than in the same period of 2021, and 60.8% less than the levels observed in the first quarter of 2019, but Mexico only had a variation of 22.6%, while Turkey registered 9.5% less, and Italy 31.0%.
He detailed that in the period January-March 2022, the regions of Europe and the Americas led the recovery. In Europe, the arrival of international tourists increased 279.7%, compared to the first quarter of 2021, in the Americas it rose 117.5%, in the same three months. However, arrivals to Europe and the Americas remained 42.9% and 46.4% lower than the levels of the same period in 2019, respectively.
It added that international tourist arrivals to the Middle East and Africa regions also experienced strong growth of 131.7% and 95.8%, respectively, compared to the first quarter of 2021, although they remained 58.5% and 61.1% below 2019 levels, respectively.
Regarding the Asia-Pacific region, the Secretary of Tourism indicated that there was an increase in the arrival of international tourists of 64.5% compared to 2021, but with a level 92.6% lower than the figures for 2019.
The Secretary of Tourism pointed out that, according to UNWTO expectations, international tourist arrivals in 2022 would reach between 55% and 70% of 2019 levels.
He stressed that the confidence index of the international organization showed a marked rebound, since for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, this indicator returned to the levels of 2019.
