More than 51 million tourists will travel through Mexico during the boreal summer

The Secretary of Tourism pointed out that the figure represents an increase of 14.5% compared to the same period in 2021 and marks a recovery of 92.3% compared to 2019

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that for this summer vacation period 2022, which includes the months of July and August, it is estimated that a total of 51 million 765 thousand national and foreign tourists travel through the national territory.

The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) reported that, according to expectations, 22 million 291 thousand tourists will stay in hotels, this is 14.5% more than in the same holiday period of 2021, and will represent a recovery of 92.3% in the arrival of tourists to hotels compared to the summer of 2019.

He indicated that of the tourists who will arrive at the hotel, 17 million 391 thousand will be national tourists, which represents 78.0% of the total, and 4 million 899 thousand will be foreigners, that is 22.0%.

In addition, he pointed out that it is estimated that this holiday season 26 million 748 thousand national tourists and 2 million 726 thousand more international tourists will stay in another form of lodging such as with family and friends, as well as second homes.

He highlighted that 9.1% of tourists, both domestic and foreign, are also expected to stay in shared economy accommodation.

Torruco Marqués pointed out that during July and August 2022 a hotel occupancy is estimated at a national level of 57.8%, this is 12.3 percentage points more compared to the same period in 2021, when 45.5% of general occupancy was registered.

He added that a spill is expected for lodging of 59 thousand 93 million pesos, which together with other tourist services will reach a total tourist consumption of 649 thousand 25 million pesos.

The Secretary of Tourism stressed that the percentage of occupation that will be reached in 12 selected and monitored centers will be for: Cancun, 73.6%; Puerto Vallarta, 71.2%; Los Cabos, 67.3%; Mexico City, 63.4%; Puebla, 61.6%; Queretaro, 60.0%; Aguascalientes, 55.0%; Acapulco, 54.4%; Villahermosa, 49.2%; Tuxtla Gutierrez, 43.5%; San Cristóbal de las Casas, 43.4% and San Miguel de Allende, 40.7%.

Additionally in cities it is expected for: Monterrey, 64.9%; Merida, 60.7%; Oaxaca, 58.2%; Guadalajara, 56.2%; La Paz, 54.6% and Guanajuato, 45.9%.

While in Magical Towns such as: Tulum, 78.0%; Isla Mujeres, 59.2%; Loreto, 50.7% and Todos Santos, 46.6%. As well as in other beach destinations: Riviera Maya, 77.2%; Mazatlan, 76.2%; Bahías de Huatulco, 64.8% and Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, 64.3%.
