ME by Meliá and Queer Destinations sign a commitment to promote LGBTQ+ tourism
Meliá Hotels International will also become the first international chain to obtain the Queer Destinations Committed accreditation in all its hotels in Mexico
Meliá Hotels International and Queer Destinations, a firm specializing in LGBTQ+ tourism training and consultancy, have announced an agreement to certify a collection of hotels under the ME by Meliá brand with the Queer Destinations Committed accreditation, a set of standards recognized internationally by the IGLTA (Association Tourism International for LGBTQ+) that helps companies and destinations to better prepare themselves to optimally and safely receive the LGBTQ+ segment, which represents 10% of the global tourism market.
Melia Hotels International, recognized this year by the Financial Times as one of the leading companies in diversity in Europe, continues to reinforce its commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion both in its hotels and offices. For this reason, as a result of its collaboration with Queer Destinations, it has already obtained the Queer Destinations Committed accreditation in a selection of hotels of its luxury lifestyle brand ME by Meliá, such as ME Madrid and ME Cabo, and has also promised to certify this year its Paradisus by Meliá hotels in Mexico (Paradisus Los Cabos –already accredited-, Paradisus Cancún, Paradisus La Perla and Paradisus Playa del Carmen), as well as the INNSiDE New York Nomad hotel, a benchmark for the company in one of the largest tourist showcases in the world.
The accreditation process will consist of more than 3,000 company employees receiving this year the Hospitality Meets Diversity training from Queers Destinations, which provides the necessary knowledge about the LGBTQ+ community and its consumption habits, as well as including recommendations for improvement in the areas management of diversity and inclusion, human resources, operations and marketing.
"This agreement means reaffirming our will to continue training our teams and designing innovative and responsible strategies to offer the best possible experiences to LGBTQ+ travelers with which to exceed their expectations," said Manuel Riego, Marketing Vice President of Meliá Hotels International.
Travel spending by LGBTQ+ travelers is estimated to exceed $200 billion a year and the community is expected to reach 180 million travelers by 2030, according to the World Tourism Organization.
Oriol Pàmies, Founder of Queer Destinations, commented that “since 2019 we have worked hand in hand with Meliá Hotels Internacional in raising awareness of its human capital. Meliá's commitment to the segment is growing and it is a pleasure for us to have the alliance of an international chain that values the creation of diverse and inclusive spaces for all people. This commitment is the first step in attracting LGBTQ+ tourists looking to live unique experiences in safe spaces.”
