Public and private investment triggering tourism activity in Mexico

At the opening of the Cancun Investment Summit Forum 2022, the Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco Marqués, reported that Tourism FDI from January to June 2022 amounted to 2,779 million dollars

The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, highlighted the importance of both public and private investment, focused on the development of tourism infrastructure, which is a trigger for the activity of the sector and the generation of economic benefits in destinations. of the country, to fulfill the task of making tourism a tool for social reconciliation.

Accompanied by the Governor of Quintana Roo, Carlos Joaquín González, the head of the Tourism Secretariat (Sectur), he inaugurated the Cancun Investment Summit Forum 2022, which takes place in this city of Quintana Roo, where he highlighted that Foreign Investment Direct in Tourism (FDI), generated from January to June 2022, amounted to 2 thousand 779 million dollars, thus exceeding what was captured in all of 2019, which was 1,295 million dollars, and represented a growth of 303.4% compared to the investment captured in the same period of 2021, equivalent to 10% of the National Foreign Direct Investment.

Before the president of the Mexican Association of Real Estate Professionals of the State of Quintana Roo, Cancun section, Miguel Ángel Lemus, and leaders of the real estate sector, Torruco Marqués commented: "It is clear that businessmen and investors continue to place their trust in Mexico and in the Government of the Republic, headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The great potential of this sector and its wide possibilities of developing successful and productive businesses, make it prone to both national and foreign investment, a fundamental engine in the growth and development of any activity”.

He indicated that the public and private sectors work hand in hand and in complete coordination, where the first assumes the leading role by providing the necessary economic capital for the creation of infrastructure, and the second, as a promoter and facilitator, generating the conditions for the full and proper business development.

The Secretary of Tourism stressed, however, that public investment is fundamental, and for this reason the current administration is carrying out important infrastructure works such as the recently inaugurated Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), which today has 26 daily flights, As of September 15, it will have 46 daily air operations and in December it will increase to 64.

He stated that the two overpasses in the Circuito Exterior Mexiquense will soon be completed, as well as the modernization and expansion of the Mexico-Pachuca highway, works that will give access to the AIFA.

He pointed out that this, together with the Mexico City International Airport and the Toluca International Airport, make up the metropolitan airport system, which at its maximum capacity will be able to transport more than 100 million passengers a year.

Torruco Marqués also detailed the projects being carried out in Quintana Roo to boost air connectivity, such as the expansion and remodeling of the Chetumal airport, completed in 2020; and the basic engineering studies for the construction of the Tulum International Airport, which is estimated to be completed next year.

The country's airport network will also be strengthened with the expansion and modernization of the airports of Puerto Escondido, in Oaxaca; and Tepic, in Nayarit, which will conclude in 2023; In addition, this year, the Barrancas del Cobre airport will be inaugurated, in Creel, Chihuahua, which will contribute to detonate the economy of the entity and the region.

The head of Sectur indicated that in terms of land connectivity, Mexico has 175 thousand 525 kilometers of highways, of which 50 thousand 743 are federal, 102 thousand 715 state and 22 thousand 067 municipal.

“I want to highlight the role played by the Green Angels' in our highway network, offering assistance and assistance to our travelers at all times. In support of the work carried out by this corporation, Sectur launched the Geointelligence Center, through which we can analyze the daily behavior of strategic highway routes in real time”, he commented.

He pointed out that another large-scale tourism infrastructure project, which has the largest investment in tourism in the last 60 years, is the Mayan Train, which along 1,524 kilometers of railway will have 20 stations, bringing progress to Yucatan , Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas, with a potential of 190 high-impact tourist attractions.

He added that the construction of the Transoceanic Train continues, which will join the ports of Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, and Salina Cruz, Oaxaca.

Torruco Marqués emphasized the Islas Marías project, which is no longer a prison where visitors, who will set sail from the also remodeled town of San Blas, Nayarit, will be able to enjoy 8 tourist experiences. In this entity, the Magical Town of Mexcaltitán was also remodeled, and the tourist flow will be increased with the Compostela-Puerto Vallarta highway.

He added that the works continue on the elevated train that goes from Observatorio to Metepec, and the consolidation of the Oaxaca-Isthmus of Tehuantepec and Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highways, the latter facilitating the connection with Huatulco; and pointed out that with the recent inauguration of the first stage of the Dos Bocas refinery, tourism activity will be favored, especially business tourism, in Campeche and Tabasco.

"All these are just some of the investment projects that the government of the republic has been carrying out to encourage the economy and tourism, and we will continue walking along the same route," said Torruco Marqués.

Reiteró que los resultados en materia de turismo confirman que las políticas ordenadas por el presidente de México, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, ante los embates de la pandemia, fueron las acertadas; gracias a la no restricción de vuelos internacionales; la implementación inmediata de los protocolos biosanitarios, diseñados en colaboración entre Sectur y Secretaría de Salud, contando con el apoyo del sector privado y los gobiernos de los cinco estados más visitados, entre ellos Quintana Roo; y que gracias a la austeridad republicana, fue posible disponer de recursos suficientes para la compra oportuna de vacunas contra el Covid-19.

For his part, the governor of Quintana Roo, highlighted the actions undertaken in the entity to strengthen the tourism industry, among them, the training, registration and accreditation program in which the real estate activity and the training of real estate consultants are made transparent.

He specified that almost two thousand trained real estate consultants have been registered, and 958 registrations and accreditations were issued, which meant income for almost 6 million pesos.   

After the inauguration, the secretary of Tourism and the governor toured the exhibition, where they spoke with the leaders and businessmen of the real estate sector, who expressed their confidence in continuing to work hand in hand with the authorities to promote investment and Economy of mexico.
