Until July, 12.2 million international tourists entered Mexico by air
The main issuing markets were the United States, Canada and Colombia
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, announced that from January to July 2022 the arrival of 12 million 191 thousand international tourists by air to Mexico was registered according to their nationality, which represents an increase of 70.2%. comparing to 2021.
The head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) highlighted that, according to information from the Migration Policy-Registration and Identity of Persons Unit of the Ministry of the Interior, this figure also exceeds the arrivals of the same period of 2019, with 3.4 %, when 11 million 787 thousand tourists were registered.
He indicated that the main countries with international tourist arrivals by air to Mexico from January to July 2022 were the United States, Canada and Colombia, with 9 million 401 thousand tourists; this is 59.1% more than in 2021, and also exceeding 10.7% the 8 million 495 thousand tourists in 2019.
Torruco Marqués pointed out that during the first seven months of the year, the arrival of American tourists by air reached 7 million 968 thousand, which means 40.9% more than in 2021, when 5 million 654 thousand tourists arrived, also exceeding by 19.9% the 2019 arrivals, which were 6 million 647 thousand.
He added that the arrival of Canadian tourists between January and July 2022 was 945,575 tourists, this is 1,197.9% higher than the 72,857 tourists who arrived in 2021; being 37.8% away from reaching those captured in 2019, which were one million 521 thousand tourists.
During the period January-July 2022, the arrival of Colombians by air was 486 thousand 886, higher by 168.4% compared to 2021, when 181 thousand 373 tourists arrived, and also exceeding the 327 thousand 201 arrivals of 2019, with 48.8 %, said the head of Sectur.
Of the rest of nationalities, 2 million 791 thousand tourists were counted, this is an increase of 122.2% compared to the period January-July 2021, and representing a market share of 22.9%.
The Secretary of Tourism reported that between January and July 2022, Cancun, the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) and Los Cabos, were the airports that received the largest number of international tourists, with 9 million 420 thousand international tourists, this is 71.8% more than 2021; also exceeding the arrivals of 2019 with 4%, when 9 million 53 thousand tourists arrived.
5,714,000 international tourists arrived at the Cancun airport, this is 72% more than in the same period of 2021; 2 million 382 thousand tourists arrived at the AICM, 94.1% more than in 2021; and the Los Cabos airport received one million 323 thousand international tourists, this is 42% more than what was observed between January and July 2021.
The rest of the airports registered the arrival of 2 million 722 thousand international tourists, a level higher by 64.7% compared to arrivals from January to July 2021.
