The Andean country reinforces the promotion of destinations to return to pre-pandemic levels

Until the Covid-19 pandemic, Peru's tourism industry had a very high demand generated by really strong source markets. Today PROMPERÚ seeks to recover those levels as soon as possible. To find out what is going on there and obtain more details, we exclusively interviewed its executive president, Amora Carbajal. We share her responses below:

How do you describe the current situation of tourism in Peru?
We are in a stage of progressive, sustained recovery, the result of the effort between the public sector and private companies to continue promoting the main destinations and diversifying the Peruvian tourist offer.

We have been executing different actions that respond to a dual strategy, planned to impact both the final public and the commercial chain of the countries that we have prioritized for tourism promotion.

Actions such as our advertising campaigns, business roundtables, international fairs, training programs and relationship with the trade, allow us to strengthen the presence of Peru at an international level.

Which destinations have recovered faster?
Definitely Lima for being the entry point to the country, in addition to the South Circuit, which involves the regions of Cusco, Arequipa, Puno and which are the most consolidated destinations par excellence.

What do you think has changed in this new stage in terms of tourist demand?
Undoubtedly today's travelers give greater importance to their trips. They seek to clear their heads, discover open places, have contact with nature, all with the family. Tourists are more demanding, better informed and evaluate each of their options.

Knowing these new characteristics allows us to be prepared to receive and comply with each of these demands. Likewise, it is important for us to assure you that we comply with all the protocols to continue offering a safe destination.

What is your perception of tourism in your country?
It is a priority activity, it is part of the state policy. In the last 20 years, it has been managed in a sustained and responsible manner to strengthen Peru as a destination of excellence within the main markets.

We have been working hard to recover the pre-pandemic figures through our various international promotion activities, to date we are at 1 million 200 thousand arrivals and we seek to widely exceed that figure. Likewise, we seek to consolidate ourselves as a gastronomic destination par excellence at an international level.

How do you plan to promote Peru to attract more events?
We are committed to events such as the IBTM, WMF. We recognize and trust business platforms like these, in addition to training and strategic alliances with the Lima Convention Bureau for the development of synergies and joint platforms.

Specifically on the Mexican issuing market, how much does it represent in percentage terms?
It is important to note that today the Mexican market contributes 4% of the total number of people who traveled to Peru in the period from January to July 2022, only behind the United States, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Spain.

This percentage translates into 36,121 international arrivals at the Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima, from Mexico.

What current connectivity do both countries have and what plans are there to expand it?
We currently have 58 direct weekly flights connecting Lima with Mexico City and Cancun, through Volaris, Aeroméxico, Latam and Sky. In addition, the growth projection of the airlines translates into the commitment to progressively increase the frequencies and capacity of the aircraft. This gradual restoration of air connectivity between Mexico and Peru gives us an encouraging picture of the tourist revival in the Latin American region.

We invite you to discover Peru. We are ready to receive travelers who arrive for vacations, incentive groups, business, recreation. In Peru, Mexicans will feel at home, our warmth, the similarity of our ancient cultures and the unique experiences that they will live in Peru, will undoubtedly conquer the hearts of those who visit us.
Likewise, we invite you to vote for our destination in the World Travel Awards.
