CHTA has just issued a statement clarifying the situation in the Caribbean after the passage of Hurricane Fiona and confirming that the CHTA Marketplace will take place on the scheduled date in Puerto Rico. We share the full text below:
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (September 20, 2022) -The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) expresses our solidarity with the resilient people of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic as they recover from the effects of the Hurricane Fiona, which initially made landfall in the southwestern region of Puerto Rico and caused flooding in remote and rural areas of the island, before affecting the eastern part of the Dominican Republic.
As reported, the main airport, Luis Muñoz Marín Airport in San Juan (SJU), has now reopened and we have full confidence in the ability of the people of Puerto Rico to restore normality to their beautiful territory.
We are committed to hosting both the inaugural CHTA Caribbean Travel Forum and the 40th Caribbean Travel Marketplace in San Juan, October 3-5, 2022, and look forward to seeing our friends and business partners at the dynamic in-person sessions planned for the event.
CHTA also extends our prayers and support to those who have been affected, including Guadalupe Island and others in the storm's path.
While a small part of the Caribbean has been directly affected by the storm, most of the 30 destinations in the region have not been affected and we anticipate that those that have been affected will receive visitors in the coming days.
