The proposals arise within the framework of World Tourism Day, and with the slogan of reflecting on the activity after the pandemic

World Tourism Day is commemorated every year on September 27, with celebrations led by UNWTO. Its purpose is to raise awareness in the international community about the social, cultural, political and economic value of tourism, as well as how the sector can contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

At the end of the 2022 summer season, during the months of July and August, Quintana Roo had an increase of 20% in tourist influx compared to the same period in 2019, which translates into 3 million 757 thousand 775 tourists in all the entity's destinations, exceeding expectations by 5.3%.

Given this, Grupo Piñero, a Spanish tourism company with almost 50 years of history, recommends six keys for the new moment in tourism around the world.

  • Digitization of processes: through these improvements, more efficient companies and destinations are built. The technology applied to the processes contributes to improving the experience of all users, both collaborators and visitors.
  • Another of the main axes for the future of tourism is social responsibility. Responsible tourism begins with synergy between workers and the local community, as well as raising awareness among tourists, in order to achieve sustainable development and define guidelines for ethical conduct.
  • The exercise of sustainable tourism: as a sector, we must promote a sustainable use of resources, as well as for consumers. Preserving the essence of the environment in destinations and improving the surroundings are two great challenges that we face in order to guarantee responsible tourism.
  • Along the same lines, continuing to contribute to sustainable mobility with increasingly clean, durable, comfortable and environmentally friendly transport is the trend to follow. Revolving the entire tourist experience around respect for the environment will shape, step by step, how we do tourism around the world. Even more in such a determining factor as mobility.
  • Hand in hand with the local community: Community members are fundamental in the development of a tourism company. Maintaining a continuous dialogue will help both parties to build tourism aligned with Human Rights.
  • Betting on youth, from now on: having the vision of young people, as tourists and potential professionals in the sector, is key to responding to the needs that the sector will have to face in the future.

In the words of Encarna Piñero, CEO of Grupo Piñero: “tourism must lay its foundations in awareness and continuous dialogue with all stakeholders, in order to achieve economic, social and cultural development of host destinations. And the fact is that we are facing a future with great challenges and at Grupo Piñero we are prepared to face them with optimism and enthusiasm. We have been working for years with the firm purpose of incorporating environmental, social and good governance criteria – ESG- in all our decisions and projects, with the aim of becoming a benchmark in Sustainable Tourism”.

In this commemoration of World Tourism Day, it is necessary to continue focusing efforts on strengthening alliances within the sector to face new challenges.
