November 16, 2022

The economic impact is already similar to the pre-pandemic and it is already consolidating itself as one of the regional leaders

According to the latest official reports, 5.6 million foreign visitors entered the country between January 1 and October 31. Of that number, 3 million were tourists; that is, they spent at least one night in Argentina. This is an upward trend: October was the month with the highest influx of tourists in absolute terms and recovery compared to the pre-pandemic so far this year: 410,000 entered (representing a 76% recovery in relation to 2019).

In the same sense, the accumulated spending by foreign tourists so far this year is USD 2,519 million and has already reached pre-pandemic numbers: USD 324 million entered during October, which meant a 94% recovery compared to the same month of 2019. .

Regarding the origin of visitors, Brazil (22% of the total), Uruguay (21.5%), Chile (11.7%), Paraguay (10.5%), the United States (7.3%), Spain ( 3.5%), Bolivia (3.5%), Colombia (2.4%), Peru (2.4%) and France (1.8%) lead the ranking. Among the markets with the best recovery in the last month were Uruguay (130% compared to the same period of the pre-pandemic), Ecuador (87%), the United States (86%), Mexico (81%), Colombia (80%) , Chile (78%) and Brazil (77%).

In October, the air route was the one with the highest growth, with 20% compared to September, reaching the maximum so far this year (158 thousand tourists). In the annual accumulated number of tourists per international access step, it can be seen that the two main steps are Ezeiza Airport and Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, with 24% and 16% respectively. They are followed by the Port of Buenos Aires (12%), the Trancredo Neves International Bridge and the Gualeguaychú-Fray Bentos Pass (both with 8%).

“Hand in hand with PreViaje we have recovered domestic tourism very quickly and today we are reaching record numbers in both high and low seasons. The next challenge is to quickly reach pre-pandemic levels of international tourism and we are very close to achieving it, as a result of the strong recovery in connectivity in recent months as a result of the return of many airlines, the arrival of new companies and the firm commitment to the receptive tourism that Aerolíneas Argentinas is carrying out”, assured the Minister of Tourism and Sports of the Nation, Matías Lammens.

“The level of spending by foreign tourists is already in pre-pandemic figures and we aim to close the year with a very high level of tourist income, both from the region and from more distant countries such as the United States, Spain and France. . We hope that the measure that we announced last week together with minister Sergio Massa and the president of the BCRA, Miguel Pesce, underpin this growth and mean a significant contribution of foreign currency to the formal market. Tourism led the numbers of job creation and economic growth in the first semester and we are convinced that, with this rapid recovery of international tourism, it will be a determining sector for economic development in the coming years," added the national official.
