The airlines Iberia, Latam and Avianca continue to work together
The president of Iberia, Javier Sánchez-Prieto, highlighted that Latam and Avianca are its main partners in the region
In an interview with Portafolio, the executive said that "having groups or airlines that have more financial muscle and more investment capacity is positive" because destinations are being developed and there is more connectivity. He also referred to inflation and the devaluation of the currency in South America: "In some Latin American countries it is a little more expensive to travel to Europe, but also for Europeans it is cheaper to travel to Latin America. That balances out somewhat and has not had a very abrupt effect on demand. A the best I am too optimistic but we do not see any negative symptoms in the demand”, he considered.
In addition, he elaborated on the situation of Iberia in Colombia, Argentina and Mexico. “In the near future we could try to develop more things in Colombia. And if it is true that we do it, it will be with Bogotá, but we are seeing the same thing here or in Buenos Aires, where we are doing 14 flights a week and before the pandemic we were flying 12. In Mexico we are already flying three flights a day. We see it as more efficient to continue increasing connectivity with the capitals than to start flying point-to-point to other cities, ”he added, as revealed by REPORTUR.com.ar (Iberia outlines a strategy to add more flights to Argentina).
The airline is also seeing a rebound in the Dominican Republic (“a smaller market, but in which demand was stronger than before 2019”), Peru (“Lima is working very well”) and the United States (we have taken advantage after the pandemic to launch new routes in North America and they are also doing reasonably well).
