Mexico and the United States advance in agreements to target travel alerts
They stressed the importance of advancing in the agreements so that travel alerts are properly focused for each entity
The Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués, participated in the virtual seminar "Travel recommendations" organized by the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, in which authorities from the United States Department of State participated, with the purpose of advancing in the agreements so that travel alerts to our country are duly focused for each entity.
Accompanied by state tourism secretaries and representatives, the head of the Ministry of Tourism (Sectur) stressed that through this meeting, the agreement reached last May in Washington DC, within the framework of Operation Doorknock, is followed up; when he suggested that the travel alerts issued by the US authority detail the areas that could represent problems and not generalize, since some isolated cases of insecurity are found several kilometers from tourist destinations.
Torruco Marqués thanked the invitation of Ambassador Moctezuma Barragán, as well as the openness of the authorities of the Department of State of the United States, to participate in this dialogue that will strengthen the bilateral relationship between both countries and promote the tourist exchange of citizens.
He emphasized the closeness that exists between the two nations, not only because of the wide border they share, "but because over the years we have learned to trust and work with each other," for which he invited attendees to continue working in synergy and in this way, find solutions to mutual problems.
“We live in an era where the destiny of countries is not built individually and in isolation, but jointly with friendly nations. In North America we have understood that prosperity and security will be greater and stronger if we work together, ”she declared.
The Secretary of Tourism celebrated the work of Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma Barragán to promote meetings between authorities from the United States and the state governments of Mexico, and in this way, through dialogue, build a better shared future.
He stressed the importance of the US market for Mexican tourism, since only when considering air travel, in 2021 US citizens increased their arrivals in Mexico by 100.9%, going from 5 million 16 thousand trips in 2020, to 10 million 77 trips in 2021, only 0.8 percent below the levels observed in 2019, when 10 million 158 thousand tourists arrived by air.
In the same way, he highlighted the figures of the Immigration Policy, Registration and Identity Unit of the Ministry of the Interior, which in 2021 recorded that the arrival of American tourists by air represented 72.7% of the total arrivals in our country.
“The proximity between Mexico and the United States becomes relevant if we review the data on tourist exchange. According to information from the United States Department of Commerce, in 2021, the participation of trips made by Americans to Mexico was 58.6%, which contrasts with 4.3% of trips to Canada and 37.1% of total trips from United States to other regions of the world," he said.
Therefore, he added that the current administration headed by the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, through the Ministry of Tourism, is working on promotional actions, such as the implementation of the "Operation Knock Doors" program, whose The objective is to position Mexico as a preferred destination for international tourists. He added that within this framework work tours have been carried out in Washington, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Houston, San Antonio and before closing this year in Dallas, Texas; as well as in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Vancouver, in Canada.
In the same vein, with the support of embassies and consuls, the “Reencounter with my Roots” program is carried out, whose intention is to take advantage of the potential of the approximately 35 million Mexican-Americans in the United States.
“To conclude, allow me to take up what was expressed by Presidents Joe Biden and Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in their most recent meeting in July of this year: 'The United States and Mexico reaffirm their vast and profound cooperation efforts and their commitment to forge a more prosperous and secure future for the people of North America,” he said.
For his part, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, highlighted the importance of the link between the authorities of the United States Department of State, with the secretaries and representatives of Mexican entities in order to have a more nourished dialogue than allows to understand the situation of each one of the tourist destinations of the country.
On her occasion, Angela Kerwin, Secretary of Consular Affairs of the United States Department of State, specified that timely information is the key to boosting tourism from the neighboring nation to Mexico, and in this way, tourists and US residents know in a timely manner the condition of the destination they visit or where they reside.
He emphasized that Mexico continues to be a very attractive destination for Americans due to its beaches, cities, gastronomy and the warmth of its people, and these meetings will allow them to travel with confidence to enjoy a pleasant experience.
